New LNG bunkering vessel trio will feature Schottel propulsion packages

New LNG Bunkering Vessels Under Construction

Three LNG bunkering vessels are being built at the Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering Co. shipyard in China. Each vessel will have a capacity of 20,000 cubic meters and will be equipped with a complete Schottel propulsion package. Two of these vessels have been ordered by Avenir LNG Ltd, a UK-based LNG bunkering provider, while the third is for Singapore’s Vitol International Shipping Ltd. Vitol has also signed a seven-year time charter for one of Avenir’s vessels, starting in the fourth quarter of 2026, with options to extend for up to ten years.

Advanced Propulsion Systems for Enhanced Maneuverability

Each vessel measures 159.9 by 25 meters and will feature a Schottel type SCP 119 4-X controllable pitch propeller. This propeller has an input power of 5,800 kW and a diameter of 6,000 mm, allowing the vessels to reach a free sailing speed of up to 15.5 knots. The design includes a full-feathering function, enabling the propeller blades to adjust to a low-resistance position when necessary. This robust and user-friendly propulsion unit requires minimal maintenance, ensuring a long service life.

In addition to the main propeller, the vessels will also include a Schottel retractable RudderPropeller type SRP 380 R, which provides 1,300 kW of power and has a diameter of 2,200 mm. When extended, this unit offers full 360-degree steerability, enhancing maneuverability and positioning precision. The SRP-R features an 8-degree tilted propeller shaft, which minimizes interaction with the hull, thereby improving propulsion efficiency. When not in use, the SRP-R can be retracted into the hull, reducing drag and vessel draft during berthing.

To further improve maneuvering capabilities, each vessel will be equipped with a Schottel TransverseThruster type STT 2 FP, delivering 750 kW and a propeller diameter of 1,540 mm. This thruster is versatile, suitable for both brief docking operations and continuous use under heavy loads. With this comprehensive propulsion package, the bunkering vessels will excel in maneuverability, crucial for safely handling hazardous materials like LNG during ship-to-ship transfers.

Both the SRP-R and STT will utilize Schottel LeaCon, a certified seal monitoring system that protects against seawater contamination. This system ensures that both incoming seawater and escaping gear oil are contained, allowing for early detection of wear and minimizing unscheduled maintenance. Schottel propulsion units equipped with LeaCon meet strict environmental standards, making them a reliable choice for modern bunkering operations.
