New Mission to Survey RMS Titanic’s Artifacts Begins
For the first time since the OceanGate Titan submersible imploded last year, a team of researchers is returning to the Titanic wreck to collect more digital scans and photos.
The expedition is organized by RMS Titanic, Inc., a salvage company that collects artifacts for public display. This re-survey mission, the first since 2010, will use ROVs with ultra-high-resolution 65K cameras to examine the site for signs of deterioration, new debris field discoveries, and possible new openings to explore the ship’s interior.
RMS Titanic, Inc., which owns the salvage rights, hopes to closely examine the ship’s Marconi wireless set, famous for sending the Titanic’s SOS signal. The expedition will also focus on the under-explored debris field, looking for organic material and passengers’ belongings.
Tomasina Rey, RMS Titanic’s director of collections, mentioned that this mission is crucial for assessing the condition of metals and organic materials at the site.
The 20-day expedition has chartered the Dino Chouest vessel, which arrived at the site and deployed an ROV on Wednesday. The company is live-blogging its discoveries on social media.
Zero-emission yachting – expedition trips for passengers and researchers
In memory of the Titanic and OceanGate Titan victims, the expedition will hold a commemorative ceremony and place a plaque honoring Paul-Henri Nargeolet, RMS Titanic’s research director, who died in the Titan submersible accident.
