NKT Begins Construction of Methanol-Fuelled Vessel
Danish power cable company NKT has officially laid the keel for its new dual-fuel methanol cable-laying vessel, the NKT Eleonora. This significant milestone marks the beginning of construction for a vessel designed to enhance NKT’s cable installation capabilities. The NKT Eleonora is slated for delivery in 2027 and will complement the existing NKT Victoria, forming part of the company’s next-generation cable-laying fleet.
Innovative Features and Construction Details
The NKT Eleonora will be equipped with advanced dual-fuel methanol engines manufactured by Finnish company Wärtsilä. This innovative technology allows the vessel to operate on both methanol and conventional marine fuels, promoting greater environmental sustainability in marine operations. With a cable-laying capacity of 23,000 tonnes, the NKT Eleonora is expected to play a crucial role in offshore cable installations, supporting the growing demand for renewable energy infrastructure.
Currently, the vessel is under construction at the VARD shipyard in Romania. NKT’s investment in the NKT Eleonora is part of a broader strategy to enhance production and installation capabilities across its seven high- and medium-voltage sites. This initiative reflects NKT’s commitment to advancing its operations and meeting the increasing needs of the energy sector. The introduction of the NKT Eleonora not only signifies a step forward in cable-laying technology but also underscores the company’s dedication to sustainable practices in the marine industry.
