NSCV C2 standard for weathertight and watertight integrity to be mandatory from 1 September 2025

Starting from September 1, 2025, new rules will apply to commercial vessels in Australia. These rules are called the National Standard for Commercial Vessels (NSCV) Part C2. This standard will be required for all new commercial vessels that must follow Marine Order 503.

The purpose of these new rules is to make vessels safer. They do this by setting clear guidelines to ensure that vessels stay watertight and weathertight. Watertight means no water can get inside, even if the boat is in rough waters, while weathertight means the boat is protected from rain, wind, and waves that could cause damage or make the vessel unsafe.

The government has given extra time to help vessel operators prepare for these changes. The new start date of September 2025 allows boat builders, operators, and crew members to fully understand and apply these rules. This additional time also helps the marine industry make any needed updates or changes to their vessels.

With these updates, safety on commercial vessels will improve, meaning that people on board will be better protected. This new standard is an important step toward safer waterways and safer boats in Australia.
