NYK Launches Eco-Friendly Crude Oil Carrier

On April 4th, NYK Line announced a significant advancement in maritime sustainability by finalizing a contract for the construction and charter of a very large crude oil carrier (VLCC). This innovative vessel will be equipped with a dual-fuel main engine capable of utilizing methanol, a next-generation fuel designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Constructed by Nippon Shipyard Co., Ltd., the vessel will be chartered for long-term use by Idemitsu Tanker Co., Ltd.
Innovative Design and Environmental Impact
The new VLCC, designed in collaboration with Idemitsu Tanker, IINO Kaiun Kaisha, Ltd., and Nippon Shipyard, is classified as a Malacca max vessel, emphasizing its commitment to environmental sustainability. Methanol is recognized for its potential to lower greenhouse gas emissions significantly. When compared to traditional heavy oil, methanol can reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions by approximately 15%. The use of green methanol, derived from biomass or produced through renewable energy sources, promises even greater reductions in CO₂ emissions.
This vessel marks a pivotal step in NYK’s broader strategy for decarbonization. In 2023, the company unveiled the NYK Decarbonization Story, aiming for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Achieving this ambitious goal requires enhancing the energy efficiency of their fleet and adopting alternative fuels. The new VLCC will not only be the first in NYK’s fleet to feature a state-of-the-art dual-fuel engine but will also include a large shaft generator for power generation. This combination of advanced technology positions the vessel as a leader in the future of eco-friendly crude oil transport.
