NYK Highlights Decarbonization Efforts at Asia Zero Emission Community Meeting in Jakarta

On August 21, NYK’s Representative Director and Executive Vice President, Akira Kono, took part in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) ceremony at the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC) ministerial meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia. This meeting, part of the broader efforts by the Asia Zero Emission Community, brought together top executives from leading Japanese companies, along with Ken Saito, Japan’s Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry, to discuss decarbonization initiatives across Asia.

During the MOU session, participants from the Asia Zero Emission Community showcased their decarbonization efforts and signed MOUs with partners from various AZEC countries. NYK presented two key initiatives aimed at enhancing maritime sustainability and advancing digitalization in shipping:

  • A partnership with the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore to promote maritime sustainability, improve digitalization in shipping, and develop the workforce.
  • An MOU with an Indonesian subsidiary of Pertamina to cooperate in liquefied CO2 management, LNG transportation, and ship management.

Technology readiness for key zero carbon fuels is increasing, but barriers for investment and community readiness remain significant

AZEC, a collaboration between Japan, Australia, and nine ASEAN countries (excluding Myanmar), aims to accelerate decarbonization in Asia. The meeting in Jakarta marked the second AZEC ministerial meeting, providing a platform to introduce cooperative projects between Japan and its regional partners.

NYK remains committed to working with its partners in the Asia Zero Emission Community to promote sustainable practices and reduce emissions, ensuring continued progress in maritime sustainability and supporting efforts in digitalization in shipping across Asia.
