NYK Partners for Green Ammonia Transport from India to Japan

NYK and Partners Forge Agreement for Green Ammonia Shipping to Japan

On August 20, NYK Line entered into a fundamental agreement for the marine transport of green ammonia from India to Japan. This initiative is a collaborative effort involving Kyushu Electric Power Company, Sojitz Corporation, and Sembcorp Green Hydrogen Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of Sembcorp Industries. The agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony in Delhi, where Takahiro Rokuroda, NYK’s General Manager of the Next Generation Fuel Business Group, represented the company.

The core objective of this project is to leverage India’s vast renewable energy resources to produce green ammonia at a competitive rate. In June, Kyushu Electric, Sojitz, and Sembcorp agreed to supply this green ammonia to industrial customers across Japan, with a focus on the Kyushu region.

Changing seas of ship finance

The agreement outlines the production and transportation of approximately 200,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually. NYK’s extensive expertise in ammonia marine transport will be pivotal in meeting the demand of end-users in the Kyushu region and potentially beyond.

Through this partnership, NYK aims to enhance the supply chain for next-generation energy solutions such as ammonia, contributing to Japan’s sustainable energy goals and advancing the global shift towards greener fuels.
