Poland places order for naval rescue ship as part of Ratownik program

Poland Expands Naval Capabilities with New Rescue Ship

Poland is taking significant steps to enhance its naval capabilities. The country has recently signed a contract with the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) for the construction of a new naval rescue ship. This vessel will be part of the Ratownik program, which aims to bolster the operational support for the Polish Navy. The new ship will play a crucial role in rescue operations, particularly for submarines. This initiative comes on the heels of other significant naval projects, including the acquisition of multi-purpose frigates and minehunters.

Enhancing Naval Rescue Operations

The Ratownik program is designed to improve the Polish Navy’s ability to conduct rescue operations. The new naval rescue ship will be equipped with specialized technology to support submarine operations. This capability is essential for ensuring the safety of naval personnel during missions. The ship will have a total length of approximately 96 meters and a maximum width of around 19 meters. Its maximum displacement, including additional equipment, will be about 6,500 tons.

The ship will also boast impressive operational range and speed. It will have a range of approximately 6,000 nautical miles and a maximum speed of 16 knots. The crew will consist of 100 personnel, with an additional nine staff members on board. The construction timeline is ambitious. Steel cutting is set to begin 12 months after the contract signing, with the keel expected to be laid two months later. The ship is scheduled for launch in 2027, with the Ratownik program slated for completion in 2029.

Strengthening the Polish Navy’s Future

The acquisition of the rescue ship is part of a broader strategy to modernize the Polish Navy. This strategy includes the development of new submarines under the Orka project. The Polish Navy is also enhancing its capabilities with the recent order of multi-purpose frigates and minehunters. The construction of these vessels is crucial for maintaining maritime security in the Baltic Sea region.

Jan Grabowski, a member of the Management Board of PGZ, emphasized the importance of this program. He stated that the Ratownik program would improve the skills and technologies of the Polish Navy. It represents a generational opportunity for Polish companies to develop competencies in both surface and underwater units. Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz echoed this sentiment, highlighting the need for enhanced operational capabilities in the Baltic Sea.
