Polish Navy to receive new million-dollar rescue ship

The Polish Navy is set to enhance its maritime capabilities with a significant new addition. Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ), along with its subsidiaries PGZ Stocznia Wojenna and Ośrodek Badawczo-Rozwojowy Centrum Techniki Morskiej, has finalized a contract with the Armaments Agency. This agreement, valued at over 1 billion zlotys (approximately $241.46 million), aims to supply a state-of-the-art rescue ship. The contract was officially signed at the Naval Academy in Gdynia, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz in attendance. This initiative is part of the broader RATOWNIK program, which is integral to the Polish Armed Forces’ technical modernization plan.

The new rescue ship will be designed specifically to support submarine operations. It will feature specialized equipment tailored for rescue missions. The vessel will measure around 96 meters in length and 19 meters in width. It will have a maximum speed of 16 knots and a range of up to 6,000 nautical miles. This capability is crucial for ensuring effective rescue operations in various maritime conditions.

The ship will accommodate a crew of 100, along with an additional nine staff members. This capacity allows for efficient operations during rescue missions and enhances the overall operational readiness of the Polish Navy. The RATOWNIK program is expected to be completed between 2025 and 2029, aligning with other significant projects such as the ORKA program, which focuses on acquiring new submarines for the Polish Navy.
