RS assists Russian companies in refining international requirements for the carriage of solid bulk cargoes

Russia Proposes Easier Shipping Rules for Apatite Concentrate to IMO

Specialists from the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) have helped the Russian delegation prepare important documents for the International Maritime Organization (IMO). These documents include a proposal to add new rules for transporting apatite concentrate to the International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code.

At present, apatite concentrate is not officially listed in the IMSBC Code. This causes extra work for companies that need to ship it. They have to get permission from the authorities at the port of loading, the port of discharge, and the country where the ship is registered every time they want to transport this cargo. The process is slow, requires a lot of paperwork, and costs more money.

The Russian Federation, with help from RS specialists, has prepared drafts of new documents. These drafts will be reviewed at the IMO’s Sub-Committee on Carriage of Cargoes and Containers meeting this September. If approved, the new rules would make shipping apatite concentrate much easier. The rules would be added to the IMSBC Code, meaning less paperwork and faster shipping, while still keeping ships and their crews safe.

This change would be very important for the Russian shipping industry, as it would help lower costs and speed up the transportation of apatite concentrate.
