Search Intensifies for Missing Crew After MV Jozani II Sinking

Search efforts for the captain and a sailor missing since the MV Jozani II sank have entered a third day, with authorities ramping up a multi-agency rescue operation. The vessel, which was transporting cement from Tanga to Zanzibar, capsized in the Indian Ocean, leaving two crew members unaccounted for while ten others were rescued. The Zanzibar Maritime Authority (ZMA) is leading the ongoing search, despite challenging weather conditions.

Rescue Operations Underway Amidst Adverse Conditions

The MV Jozani II was involved in a tragic accident shortly after departing Tanga Port, reportedly due to strong waves and high winds that struck the vessel. According to preliminary reports from the Zanzibar Maritime Authority, the ship lost direction and sank suddenly, providing little time for the crew to react or call for help. Ten crew members managed to escape, but the captain and one sailor remain missing.

Suleiman Abdulla Salim, the Acting Head of Public Relations at the Zanzibar Ports and Maritime Authority, confirmed that the search operation is being conducted around the clock, with collaboration from various security and maritime agencies. “We are making every effort to ensure we find the missing persons, and we will not stop this operation until we have definitive answers,” Salim stated. He emphasized the importance of cooperation among stakeholders, which has provided hope to the families of the missing crew members.

Survivors have recounted harrowing experiences during the incident. Sailor Abdul Mdogo described the chaos as the vessel was overwhelmed by waves and wind. “We left Tanga Port at 7:45 p.m., and the cause of the accident was strong waves and wind following heavy rainfall,” he recalled. Many survivors were forced to jump into the sea, wearing life jackets, as the situation deteriorated rapidly. Abdul noted that panic spread among the crew, with everyone focused on their own survival.

Survivors Share Harrowing Accounts of the Incident

After hours of battling the cold and turbulent waters, the survivors were eventually rescued by a passing oil tanker that spotted them floating at sea. They received initial assistance before being taken to safety for medical attention. “We were seen floating in the sea, and they stopped their journey to rescue us,” Abdul said, expressing gratitude for their timely rescue.

Despite their survival, the rescued crew members now face an uncertain future. “We need support because we have no jobs and no direction in life at the moment,” Abdul lamented. The emotional toll of the incident has been significant, with survivors grappling with fear for their families and the psychological impact of the ordeal. Authorities have pledged to continue search operations until the missing captain and sailor are found, urging the public to provide any information that could assist in the mission.

As rescue efforts persist under difficult maritime conditions, officials are reminding maritime operators to adhere strictly to safety guidelines and weather advisories before setting out to sea. The accounts of the survivors highlight the severity of the incident and the urgent need for continued support and vigilance in maritime safety.
