Search Underway for Missing Stowaway off Durban Coast
A search operation is currently in progress for a man who went missing at sea off the coast of Durban. The individual is believed to be one of seven stowaways who jumped from a container ship on Monday as it approached the Port of Durban. Rescuers suspect that the stowaways attempted to swim to shore after abandoning the vessel.
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has mobilized its crews to locate the missing man. According to NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon, six of the stowaways have been rescued, while one remains unaccounted for. The search efforts are being coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), which has involved multiple vessels, including the container ship from which the stowaways jumped, as well as two additional commercial motor vessels.
Multi-Agency Rescue Operation in Full Swing
The MRCC has orchestrated a comprehensive search and rescue operation, utilizing various resources to locate the missing individual. Lambinon noted that the operation includes the participation of a bulk carrier and another container ship. The NSRI has also deployed its rescue craft, including the Alick Rennie and Spirit of Surfski 6, to assist in the ongoing search efforts.
Despite the challenges posed by nightfall, the NSRI has continued its operations. The organization consulted with the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) and local police to ensure a coordinated approach. The NSRI’s Durban duty crew volunteers were activated and responded promptly to the rescue base to launch their vessels. They have been working closely with the MRCC and other vessels engaged in the search since the afternoon.
Advanced Search Techniques Employed
As the search continues, the NSRI has implemented advanced techniques to track the drift of the missing man. They deployed a drift buoy to assess the speed and direction of the sea currents. This data is crucial for plotting search patterns that take into account the environmental conditions.
Despite extensive efforts, including the use of drift tracking technology, there have been no signs of the missing man, who was reportedly last seen wearing a green shirt and green pants. The NSRI remains committed to the search, and the operation will continue until the missing individual is located. The community is urged to stay informed as updates on the situation are made available.
