Second Incident of Suspicious Activity Near Yemen
A dry bulk carrier encountered a suspicious approach from unknown forces approximately 84 nautical miles south-west of Al Mukalla, Yemen, on Saturday at 6:55 AM UTC. This marks the second such incident reported in the region within a short span of time, raising concerns about maritime security. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a British agency responsible for monitoring maritime activities, confirmed the incident through a social media post.
According to the UKMTO, the vessel’s master reported that a green-hulled skiff approached to within 500 meters of the bulk carrier. The skiff was accompanied by a white fishing vessel, further complicating the situation. This incident follows a similar occurrence just 24 hours earlier, indicating a potential pattern of suspicious activity in these waters.
Context of Maritime Security Threats
The recent incidents come amid heightened tensions in the region, particularly due to threats from Iran and Yemen’s Houthi movement. Both have indicated intentions to resume attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait since the escalation of conflict in the Middle East. However, as of now, there have been no confirmed attacks linked to these threats.
In addition to the threats from regional actors, there has been a notable increase in pirate activity off the coast of Somalia over the past two weeks. This resurgence of piracy adds another layer of risk for vessels operating in the area, as crews must remain vigilant against both potential attacks from state actors and opportunistic piracy.
The combination of these factors has prompted maritime security agencies to issue warnings and advisories for vessels transiting through these waters. Ship operators are encouraged to maintain a heightened state of awareness and report any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
