SIPG arm books LNG bunker newbuild at Jiangnan
Shanghai Port Group Orders New LNG Bunker Vessel

Shanghai Port Group Energy has taken a significant step in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector by ordering a new LNG bunker vessel from Jiangnan Shipyard. This 20,000 cubic meter vessel is expected to be delivered in the first half of 2027. The contract details remain undisclosed, but the vessel is designed to meet stringent environmental standards, including reduced emissions of greenhouse gases.
Innovative Design and Environmental Compliance
The new LNG bunker vessel will incorporate advanced technology, featuring three twin-ear C-type tanks and a full-rotating electric propulsion system. This innovative design not only enhances operational efficiency but also aims to comply with the NOx Tier III regulations. Additionally, the vessel is engineered to achieve near-zero SOx emissions, contributing to a significant reduction in environmental impact.
In alignment with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints, the vessel is expected to lower CO₂ greenhouse gases by approximately 20%. This move is part of a broader trend in the maritime industry, particularly within the LNG bunkering segment, which is witnessing a surge in newbuilding activities. Shipyards in China and South Korea are ramping up production, with new vessels ranging from 7,800 cubic meters to 20,000 cubic meters being constructed to support the growing fleet of LNG-powered ships.
Industry forecasts suggest that the number of LNG-powered vessels will double by the end of the decade, increasing from over 600 ships at the end of 2024. The Shanghai Port Group’s commitment to investing in modern LNG infrastructure underscores the strategic importance of LNG as a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels, reflecting the industry’s shift towards more sustainable practices.
