Sohar Port aims to enhance sustainability practices through AFID membership

15th November, 2024

Sohar Port and Freezone has taken a big step towards reducing pollution and using cleaner energy by joining the Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation (AFID). This alliance is run by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). It aims to lower pollution in industries and help them understand how to use renewable energy like solar and wind power. This move is seen as an important milestone for the port.

Dr. Abdullah Al Abri, who is the Vice President of Sustainability at Sohar Port and Freezone, called this step “a landmark moment in our sustainability journey.” He explained that joining AFID fits well with Sohar’s long-term plans and goals. He added, “By working together with industry experts and sharing what we know, we are helping others on their journey to reduce pollution. We are also playing a part in a worldwide effort to change the future of industries.”

As a member of AFID, Sohar Port is committed to improving its sustainability. They plan to use clean energy sources, such as green hydrogen and solar power, to cut down on harmful emissions. They will also focus on using a circular economy model, which means reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling as much as possible. This is all part of their main goal—to be a leader in reducing pollution and promoting green practices in their operations.

Beyond just making their own operations cleaner, Sohar Port is also dedicated to teaching others about the importance of sustainability in industries. By being part of AFID, they hope to have better conversations with partners and other companies about the need to lower pollution. They want to create a place where everyone understands the value of sustainability and takes responsibility for their impact on the environment.

This new step is expected to make Sohar Port more attractive to investors who care about the environment. They believe that by showing their commitment to clean energy and reducing waste, they can encourage more environmentally friendly businesses to invest in the region.
