Svitzer signs global EcoTow agreement with Wallenius
Svitzer and Wallenius Wilhelmsen Launch EcoTow Agreement

Svitzer has entered into a significant global EcoTow agreement with the Wallenius Wilhelmsen group, marking a pivotal advancement in its decarbonization efforts. This collaboration aims to support Wallenius Wilhelmsen’s goal of reducing Scope 3 emissions across Svitzer’s worldwide operations. The agreement encompasses tug jobs in crucial markets, including Australia, the UK, and Scandinavia, leveraging biofuels to achieve substantial CO₂ savings.
Innovative Approach to Emission Reductions
The EcoTow agreement allows Svitzer to implement the mass balance principle, enabling the use of biofuels throughout its network. This innovative strategy not only helps in reducing emissions but also allows Svitzer to bank the resulting CO₂ savings in its emissions ledger. These savings are then allocated to Wallenius Wilhelmsen, effectively lowering the emissions associated with towage operations.
Ove Moring, Senior Manager of Supplier Contracting & Equipment at Wallenius Wilhelmsen, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, “This collaboration demonstrates the importance of partnerships in our decarbonization efforts. Working with a like-minded partner like Svitzer gives us a reliable path to reduce emissions beyond our direct operations.”

Looking Ahead: A Path to Transformative Change
Gareth Prowse, Svitzer’s Head of Decarbonization, underscored the forward-looking nature of the EcoTow initiative. He stated, “We see EcoTow not only as a solution for today, but as a bridge to more transformative change.” This sentiment captures the urgency and readiness of customers to take immediate action in their sustainability efforts.
The agreement not only signifies a step forward in Svitzer’s decarbonization journey but also illustrates the company’s differentiated approach to supporting its clients in their climate objectives. As the industry increasingly prioritizes sustainability, partnerships like this one are essential for driving meaningful progress in emissions reduction.
