Tanker and Container Ship Collide Near Algeciras: No Injuries or Pollution Reported
A large tanker named Gloria Maris and a giant container ship called HMM St Petersburg collided early in the morning on December 3. The incident happened about 9 nautical miles from Algeciras, Spain, in the Strait of Gibraltar—a busy waterway where many ships pass each day.
The Gloria Maris is a 274-meter-long tanker that carries oil and fuel. It left the port of Cartagena with 25 crew members on board but was not carrying cargo at the time. The 400-meter-long HMM St Petersburg, a container ship that transports goods worldwide, had 24 crew members on board and was on its way to Algeciras.
The collision caused some damage to both ships. The front part (bow) of the Gloria Maris had noticeable damage, while the HMM St Petersburg sustained a hole on its left side (port side). Thankfully, no one was hurt, and no oil or cargo leaked into the water.
After the crash, both ships were ordered to stop by local authorities. The vessels must be inspected to ensure they are safe to continue their journeys. Investigators will also look into how and why the accident happened.
Even though this incident involved two massive ships, the quick action of the crews and authorities prevented any serious harm to the environment or people. Such accidents are reminders of the risks involved in maritime travel and the importance of safety measures.
