Teekay Tankers offloads suezmax brace
Teekay Tankers Sells Vessels to Nigerian Buyers
Teekay Tankers is making significant moves in the maritime industry by offloading two ageing suezmax vessels to buyers in Nigeria. The New York-listed company has reportedly finalized a deal for the 2009-built Cascade Spirit and Aspen Spirit, valued at approximately $75 million. This transaction reflects a premium over the estimated total value of $68 million for both ships, according to industry sources.
Strategic Fleet Management
Teekay Tankers has been actively working to modernize its fleet, with over half of its vessels currently aged 15 years or older. The recent sale of the Cascade Spirit and Aspen Spirit is part of a broader strategy to dispose of older tonnage. So far this year, the company has sold six tankers, all built between 2006 and 2009, as it seeks to enhance operational efficiency and align with market demands.
Currently, Teekay’s fleet consists of 20 suezmax tankers and 15 aframax/LR2 tankers, along with five chartered-in vessels, four of which are aframax/LR2. In a notable addition to its fleet, the company recently acquired a 2019-built LR2 tanker for $63 million, identified by brokers as the Daehan-built 115,643 dwt Prostar. This acquisition underscores Teekay’s commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the shipping market while strategically managing its assets.
