Tragic Boat Collision Claims One Life on Savannah River

A tragic boating accident on the Savannah River has resulted in the death of a 25-year-old man and injuries to three others. The incident occurred on Sunday evening near the Tuckasee-King boat landing in Effingham County, prompting a swift response from local authorities. Emergency crews launched a search operation for a missing person, which has since concluded with the recovery of the victim’s body.

Details of the Incident

The collision involved two boats, each carrying an operator and a passenger. According to officials from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, the accident was reported around 5:45 p.m. Emergency responders from various agencies quickly arrived at the scene to assist. Following the crash, a search was initiated for a person who was reported missing in the water.

This search focused on the area around Stokes Bluff Landing in Hampton County, which was temporarily closed during the emergency response. Authorities later confirmed that the missing individual was identified as William Ligon III, a resident of Pooler. Tragically, he was pronounced dead after being recovered from the river.

In addition to the fatality, three other individuals sustained injuries in the collision. Two of them received treatment at the scene from emergency medical services and were subsequently released. The third individual was transported to a hospital in Savannah for further care.

The cause of the collision is currently under investigation by the DNR Law Enforcement’s Critical Incident Reconstruction Team. Authorities have stated that no further information will be disclosed until the investigation is complete, and they have not provided a timeline for when that may occur.

In the aftermath of the incident, Stokes Bluff Landing has reopened to the public. The community is mourning the loss of William Ligon III, while officials urge boaters to exercise caution on the water to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
