Transpetro in for four tanker newbuilds at local yards
Transpetro Expands Fleet with New Tankers
Brazil’s Transpetro, a subsidiary of Petrobras, is embarking on an ambitious fleet renewal and expansion program. The company has selected builders for four handysize product tankers, marking a significant step in its efforts to modernize its operations. This initiative is part of a larger plan that aims to construct a total of 25 new vessels. The decision comes after a competitive tender process that attracted interest from over 20 companies.
Strategic Investment in New Tankers
Transpetro has reached a deal worth $278 million with a consortium of domestic shipyards, Ecovix and Mac Laren. This agreement will cover the construction of newbuilds ranging from 15,000 deadweight tonnage (dwt) to 18,000 dwt. The contract is expected to be finalized by the end of January. The new tankers will play a crucial role in Petrobras’ strategy to enhance its fleet for oil and derivative logistics. By investing in its own vessels, Transpetro aims to reduce its reliance on chartering, which can be subject to price fluctuations and market volatility.
The first of these new tankers is scheduled to launch in the first half of 2026. Following this, the remaining ships will be delivered in a staggered manner every six months until mid-2028. This timeline indicates a well-planned approach to fleet expansion, ensuring that Transpetro can gradually integrate these new vessels into its operations without overwhelming its existing infrastructure.
Future Plans for Fleet Expansion
In addition to the new product tankers, Transpetro has plans to further enhance its fleet. The company, which currently operates over 30 ships and manages 48 terminals, is preparing to invite bids for eight gas carriers. This move reflects Transpetro’s commitment to diversifying its fleet and improving its logistics capabilities.
Moreover, another tender for the construction of four Medium Range 1 (MR1) tankers is anticipated to be announced around June. These additional vessels will complement the handysize tankers and gas carriers, allowing Transpetro to better serve its customers and adapt to changing market demands.
Overall, Transpetro’s strategic investments in new vessels signify a proactive approach to fleet management. By modernizing its fleet, the company aims to enhance operational efficiency and maintain a competitive edge in the logistics sector.
