US Navy Awards $283 Million Frigate Contract
HII’s Ingalls Shipbuilding division has secured a significant $283 million contract from the US Navy to support the development of the FF(X) class frigate. This contract enables Ingalls to procure essential materials, initiate design work, and commence pre-construction activities for the first ship in the new class. The move marks a crucial step in enhancing the Navy’s fleet capabilities.
Ingalls Shipbuilding’s Commitment to Excellence
Brian Blanchette, President of Ingalls Shipbuilding, expressed pride in the company’s history of delivering warships that meet stringent US military standards. He emphasized that this track record instilled confidence in the Navy, leading to the selection of the national security cutter as the foundation for the FF(X) program. Blanchette stated, “We are excited to partner with the Navy to bring these preproduction steps under contract to accelerate delivery of the frigates that our warfighters need.”
As part of the contract, Ingalls Shipbuilding will begin the process of cutting and shaping raw materials, which is essential for the main structure foundation of the first frigate. This proactive approach is designed to ensure a seamless transition from the design phase to production, not only at Ingalls but also across the broader industrial base. The FF(X) class is set to leverage the proven design of the Legend-class national security cutter, with Ingalls having previously delivered ten of these vessels to the US Coast Guard.
Ingalls will utilize the same established build sequence for the FF(X) program, which will be constructed alongside other naval vessels, including DDG 51 Flight III destroyers and LHA assault ships. To meet the Navy’s urgent demands for next-generation platforms, Ingalls Shipbuilding has invested over $1 billion in modernizing its facilities and infrastructure. HII is also working to expand US shipbuilding capacity by increasing partnerships and exploring the addition of another shipyard.

FF(X) Class: A New Era for Naval Combatants
The FF(X) class represents a pivotal advancement in the Navy’s fleet strategy, designed to be a smaller, more agile surface combatant. This new class aims to complement the larger, multi-mission warships already in service, enhancing operational flexibility across global maritime operations. The introduction of the FF(X) is expected to significantly bolster the Navy’s capabilities, allowing for more versatile responses to a variety of challenges.
As the Navy continues to evolve its fleet, the FF(X) class will play a critical role in ensuring that US maritime forces remain effective and adaptable in an increasingly complex security environment. The collaboration between Ingalls Shipbuilding and the Navy marks a promising step forward in the ongoing effort to modernize and strengthen the US naval fleet.
