USS Oscar Austin One of Two U.S. Navy DDGs Homeport Shifting to Rota, Spain
USS Oscar Austin to Join U.S. Navy Fleet at Rota Naval Base in Spain
In the fall of 2024, the USS Oscar Austin (DDG 79) will transition from Naval Station Norfolk, Virginia, to its new homeport at Rota Naval Base, Spain. This move marks the first phase of an expansion of the U.S. Navy‘s Forward Deployed Naval Force-Europe (FDNF-E), which will see the addition of two Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers to enhance capabilities in the U.S. European Command (EUCOM) and U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) areas. The second destroyer, scheduled for arrival in 2026, will be named closer to its deployment date.
This homeport change will increase the U.S. Navy’s forward-deployed destroyer presence at Rota to five, reinforcing the commitment to maritime allies in Spain and bolstering operations for maritime security in Europe and Africa. The enhanced U.S. Navy presence aims to strengthen the trans-Atlantic relationship and facilitate better coordination with the Spanish Navy, particularly in areas like ship maintenance and training.

Stationing USS Oscar Austin in Spain will provide strategic flexibility and improve operational efficiency within the European theater. The deployment is expected to ease the operational burden on other FDNF-E sailors based in Rota, thereby enhancing their quality of life and reducing stress. This move is part of a broader strategy announced in 2009 to enhance ballistic missile defense capabilities in Europe, which has included increasing the number of FDNF-E destroyers and establishing additional Aegis Ashore sites.
USS Oscar Austin, commissioned on August 19, 2000, is a Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-class destroyer named in honor of Pfc. Oscar P. Austin of the United States Marine Corps. The vessel is equipped for ballistic missile defense, anti-submarine warfare, and anti-surface warfare. It can also deploy two MH-60R Seahawk helicopters, enhancing its operational versatility in various naval missions.
