Viking takes delivery of newest future-proof cruise ship from Fincantieri

Viking Vesta Joins Fleet as Future-Ready Ship

Swiss cruise line Viking has officially welcomed its latest ocean vessel, Viking Vesta, during a delivery ceremony held on June 26 at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Ancona, Italy. This new ship is designed with advanced technology in mind, ensuring it can adapt to future innovations. With a capacity of 998 guests and a length of nearly 239 meters, Viking Vesta is classified as a small ship, continuing Viking’s commitment to eco-friendly cruising.

Innovative Features and Future Plans

Viking Vesta is not just another addition to the fleet; it represents a significant step towards sustainable cruising. The ship boasts a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 tons and is equipped with a hydrogen propulsion system. This system, combined with advanced fuel cell technology, can generate up to 6 MW of power, allowing for more environmentally friendly operations. Viking has emphasized that the ship is designed to be retrofitted with new technologies as they emerge, ensuring it remains at the forefront of innovation in the cruise industry.

Viking Line to cut emissions by 90%

The delivery of Viking Vesta comes shortly after the announcement of Viking Libra, the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship, which is currently under construction and set to launch in late 2026. Following these developments, Viking plans to introduce more hydrogen-powered vessels, including the Viking Astrea, which is scheduled for delivery in 2027. The company has ambitious growth plans, with an order for 27 additional river ships by 2028 and 10 more ocean ships by 2031. This expansion will increase Viking’s fleet to 111 river ships and 23 ocean and expedition ships by 2031, solidifying its position as a leader in the cruise industry.

As Viking continues to innovate and expand, the introduction of Viking Vesta marks a pivotal moment in the cruise line’s journey towards a more sustainable future.
