Voluntary EV Fire Prevention Measures Earn ClassNK Certification

MOL's Cerulean Ace Receives Landmark Certification for Enhanced Fire Safety Measures

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) has received recognition for its proactive efforts to enhance fire prevention on its LNG-fueled car carrier, the Cerulean Ace. The vessel, managed by MOL Ship Management, has been awarded the “Additional Fire-Fighting Measures for Vehicle Carrier (AFVC)” certification by ClassNK, specifically for its measures to prevent onboard fires during the transport of electric vehicles (EVs). This marks a significant achievement, as it is the first time a shipping company’s voluntary measures against EV fires have been certified by a classification society.

In recent years, the shipping industry has become increasingly focused on addressing the unique challenges posed by EV fires, which are notoriously difficult to extinguish and pose risks of re-ignition. ClassNK has supported these industry efforts by issuing the ‘Guidelines for the Safe Transportation of Electric Vehicles’ in 2023, outlining the characteristics of EV fires and providing detailed guidance on safety measures. These guidelines include five types of ‘AFVC’ notations, reflecting various safety enhancements that shipping companies can implement.

The Cerulean Ace was recognized for meeting three critical requirements from these guidelines: Fire Detection (FD), Fire Fighting (FF), and Enhanced Fixed Fire-Extinguishing System (EFF). One of the most advanced features implemented on the vessel is the integration of cameras and artificial intelligence (AI) systems for smoke detection in the cargo holds. This cutting-edge system allows for real-time monitoring, where any abnormalities detected by the AI are immediately reported to both the ship’s crew and the onshore management team, enhancing overall safety and response capabilities.
