Wärtsilä engines to deliver reliable power for generating facility

Wärtsilä, a global technology group, has been selected to provide power-generating sets and extra equipment for a new power station being built by Tampa Electric Company in Florida, USA. This new power facility will supply electricity to Tampa Electric’s customers under regular conditions. However, in special situations, the plant can operate in a unique “island mode” to ensure that a nearby military base always has reliable electricity.

This project is happening in two phases, with contracts made in January 2023 and December 2023. The first phase, known as the MacDill Power Station, is expected to be completed by the end of 2024. In this phase, two Wärtsilä 50SG engines that use natural gas will be installed. The second phase will be ready in the second half of 2025, with two more Wärtsilä 50SG engines added. When the entire plant is running, it will have a total power output of 72 MW, which is enough to meet the electricity needs of the area.

Jon Rodriguez, the Energy Business Director for Wärtsilä in North America, shared why this contract is so important. “A stable and dependable power supply for a military base, even in tough weather conditions, is essential,” he said. “Our technology can handle this task, as shown by our successful installations in different climates and regions around the world.”

The Wärtsilä 50SG engines are known for their efficiency, even though they don’t take up much space. They are reliable and flexible, allowing them to start and stop quickly. This makes them perfect for balancing energy needs during peak and low-demand periods.
