Wolverine Terminals Launches Bunkering Service

In a significant development for the maritime industry, the port of Prince Rupert has recently inaugurated Wolverine Terminals’ marine bunkering service. This new service enhances the port’s logistical capabilities, making it a vital hub for deep-sea shipping on Canada’s west coast. With the introduction of this service, vessels can now refuel at a strategic gateway that offers short trading routes to Asia and access to domestically produced fuels delivered by rail. The service utilizes advanced barges designed by Robert Allan Ltd., ensuring a wide range of fuel options tailored to meet the specific needs of each vessel.

Innovative Barge Design and Functionality

The Wolverine Terminals fleet consists of two specialized barges: the Wolverine Spirit 1 and the Wolverine Spirit 2. The Wolverine Spirit 1 is a 142-meter-long transloading barge designed to accommodate up to twenty-four rail tank cars on its deck. This innovative design allows for efficient loading using a marine rail ramp, which features four rail lanes and onboard turnouts. This setup is a unique feature for a rail barge, enabling the efficient transfer of fuel from railcars to the barge’s hull tanks. The combined capacity of these tanks is nearly 80,000 barrels of oil products.

Once the transloading barge is loaded, it is towed by tugs to the Wolverine Terminals project site. Here, the railcars can be drained into the barge’s tanks, ensuring a seamless transfer of fuel. The second barge, the Wolverine Spirit 2, is 78 meters long and is responsible for delivering fuel to client vessels in the harbor. With a capacity of approximately 30,000 barrels, this lightering barge can efficiently supply fuel at a rate of up to 450 cubic meters per hour. This dual-barge system not only enhances operational efficiency but also ensures that vessels receive the fuel they need in a timely manner.

Commitment to Safety and Environmental Standards

Safety and environmental responsibility are paramount in the design and operation of both barges. Each barge features a double-hull construction, extensive containment systems, and fire-fighting equipment to mitigate risks during operations. Access to the railcar tops is facilitated by a fixed gantry system, while a swinging Verhoef gangway allows safe passage between the two barges. Cranes on board enable the efficient transfer of equipment and handling of hoses, further enhancing operational safety.

Both barges comply with Transport Canada regulations and are classified for service by Lloyds Register. To minimize environmental impact, they are equipped with IMO Tier III compliant exhaust systems, after-treatment technologies, and vapour recovery systems. Additionally, low-intensity lighting is used to reduce emissions. These features reflect Wolverine Terminals’ commitment to sustainability while contributing to the economic growth of the port and surrounding region. The new bunkering service exemplifies Robert Allan Ltd.’s expertise in designing customized vessels that meet the unique needs of their clients.
