Wuhu Shipyard to Build Two 41,000-DWT Eco-Design MR1 Tankers for Vernicos Family
Greek shipowners Dimitris and George Vernicos have recently confirmed an order for two 41,000 DWT MR1 product/chemical tankers at Wuhu Shipyard in China. This decision is a part of their strategic fleet renewal and expansion plan, signaling a significant investment in the maritime industry.
New Vessels with Advanced Features
The upcoming tankers are set to be equipped with stern bunkering lines, comprehensive vapor recovery systems, and various technical upgrades tailored to meet the demanding chartering requirements of ExxonMobil. Delivery of these vessels is scheduled between the third quarter of 2028 and early 2029, showcasing the family’s commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements in the shipping sector.
Vernicos Family’s Growing Fleet
With over three decades of experience in the MR1 product/chemical tanker sector, the Vernicos family has executed more than 70 vessel transactions. Their current fleet includes the eco-friendly “Akti A”, a 40,000 DWT MR1 product/chemical tanker delivered in 2022. After the arrival of the new tankers, the family’s tanker fleet will expand to three ships, highlighting their dedication to continuous growth and modernization.
In addition to their tanker operations, the Vernicos family is actively involved in the dry bulk market through Nautilus Management SA, managing two 36,000 DWT bulk carriers. Despite their limited presence in the tanker and dry bulk sectors, the family remains a prominent player in the global tugboat industry, operating a fleet of approximately 45 tugs.
Wuhu Shipyard’s Rising Profile
Wuhu Shipyard has been gaining momentum in the maritime industry, securing multiple orders for various vessel types. Recently, the Irish shipowner Ardmore Shipping also placed an order for two 40,500 DWT IMO II product/chemical tankers at the same shipyard. With a diverse order book that includes vessels ranging from 6,600 DWT to 49,000 DWT, Wuhu Shipyard has established itself as a top-tier builder in the chemical tanker segment.
The shipyard operates three major bases, with the Nantong base being the newest addition where production activities have just commenced. This expansion highlights Wuhu Shipyard’s commitment to meeting the growing demands of the maritime industry and solidifying its position as a key player in the shipbuilding sector.
