Zanzibar, EU sign deals to boost marine conservation, gender equality
EU Strengthens Ties with Zanzibar Through New Agreements
The European Union (EU) has taken a significant step towards enhancing its partnership with Zanzibar by signing two pivotal agreements. These agreements aim to promote sustainable development, marine conservation, and gender equality in the region. The signing ceremony was attended by key figures, including Zanzibar’s Minister for Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Ms. Riziki Pembe Juma, and senior officials from the EU. This collaboration underscores the EU’s commitment to fostering inclusive growth and addressing critical challenges faced by the island.
Focus on Marine Conservation
The first agreement, valued at 32 billion Tanzanian shillings, centers on marine conservation through the Bahari Yetu Project. This initiative will be implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The project aims to tackle pressing issues such as protecting marine resources, promoting sustainable fishing practices, and combating plastic pollution.
Zanzibar is known for its rich marine biodiversity, which is vital for the local economy and the livelihoods of its communities. The Bahari Yetu Project will empower local populations by creating sustainable economic opportunities while ensuring the protection of marine ecosystems. By focusing on sustainable fishing practices, the project aims to balance economic needs with environmental conservation. This approach not only helps preserve the natural resources but also supports the long-term viability of the fishing industry in Zanzibar.
The EU’s commitment to marine conservation reflects a broader strategy to promote sustainable practices that benefit both the environment and local communities. The Bahari Yetu Project is a crucial step in this direction, aiming to create a healthier marine environment for future generations.

Advancing Gender Equality
The second agreement allocates an additional 8.8 billion Tanzanian shillings to expand the EU’s gender transformative action program in Zanzibar. This initiative will be implemented in collaboration with UN Women and the local ministry responsible for gender issues. The primary goal is to eliminate barriers to women’s rights and enhance their leadership roles in both public and private sectors.
A significant focus of this program will be on promoting girls’ education, particularly in tertiary institutions. Education is a powerful tool for empowerment, and by investing in girls’ education, the EU aims to foster a more equitable society. The initiative seeks to create an environment where women can thrive and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
EU officials, including Ms. Rita Laranjinha, emphasized that these agreements reflect the EU’s unwavering commitment to Zanzibar’s long-term development. The partnership aims to deliver tangible benefits for all Zanzibaris, contributing to shared prosperity, sustainability, and social inclusion. This commitment aligns with the EU’s Global Gateway strategy, which focuses on high-quality, sustainable investments that meet the needs of partner countries.
The signing of these agreements marks a significant milestone in the EU-Zanzibar relationship, paving the way for a brighter and more sustainable future for the region.
