Artificial Intelligence and Maritime Decarbonization Combined in CORSICA Linea and Spinergie

How CORSICA Linea Is Cutting CO2 Emissions with Spinergie’s Smart Technology

CORSICA Linea, a ferry company that transports people and goods across the Mediterranean, has started using a smart system called Voyage Optimizer to reduce its environmental impact. This system, created by French start-up Spinergie, uses big data and artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor ship performance in real-time.

By April 2024, the ferry company introduced this advanced solution to help its captains make better decisions about routes, speeds, and fuel use. The system aims to support CORSICA Linea’s goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 40% by 2030.

Cutting Pollution with Smarter Sailing

The Voyage Optimizer is a decision-making tool that helps ships use less fuel and reduce carbon emissions. It works by gathering large amounts of data from sensors on the ship and weather forecasts. This data helps captains find the best routes and speeds to save fuel while ensuring the ship arrives on time.

Captains can view fuel simulations and try different travel scenarios before the journey begins. They can choose routes based on weather forecasts, port schedules, and other factors, ensuring fuel efficiency and safety. This allows them to pick the smartest option before setting sail.

Better Fleet Management from Shore

CORSICA Linea’s shore team also benefits from this technology. They can track the performance of all ships in real-time through a fleet monitoring center. This system helps managers better understand how the ships are using fuel, find areas for improvement, and ensure smooth operations.

Each trip using the Voyage Optimizer helps save about 4% of fuel, adding up to 10,000 tons of CO2 saved every year. This not only reduces environmental impact but also improves the company’s overall efficiency.

Captains Play a Key Role

CORSICA Linea worked closely with Spinergie to design the system, making sure it meets the needs of captains. With the captains’ input, the system was fine-tuned to ensure it provides accurate data and practical recommendations.

“The data collected by sensors and our daily feedback help Spinergie improve the tool,” says Aurélien Maillard, a captain at CORSICA Linea. “This system makes sure we get the best results in both performance and environmental impact.

Long-Term Environmental Goals

CORSICA Linea has big plans to modernize its fleet and reduce pollution. The company is investing €500 million to upgrade old ships and add new, cleaner ones. Its first LNG-powered ferry, A Galeotta, was added in 2023. Another ship, Capu Rossu, is scheduled to join the fleet by 2026.

The company is also working on several other green initiatives, including:

  1. Slower speeds and better schedules to reduce fuel consumption.
  2. Hydrodynamic and motor improvements to make ships more energy-efficient.
  3. Using alternative fuels like synthetic fuels, LNG, and bio-LNG.
  4. Electric port connections to improve air quality while ships are docked.

CORSICA Linea aims to build the first zero-emission green corridor between Corsica and mainland France, ensuring pollution-free crossings in the future.

A Sustainable Future for Shipping

CORSICA Linea is committed to finding innovative ways to cut emissions and improve operations. “The decarbonization of the shipping industry is a major challenge,” says Pierre-Antoine Villanova, Managing Director of CORSICA Linea. “Our partnership with Spinergie ensures that we meet this challenge while modernizing our fleet.”

Spinergie’s technology offers valuable tools to help captains and managers make eco-friendly decisions. After each trip, the system provides reports on fuel use and energy losses, helping the team plan even more efficient journeys.

“We are proud to work with CORSICA Linea,” says Jean Cristofari, CEO of Spinergie. “Their commitment to sustainability matches our vision, and together we are creating meaningful change.”

Conclusion

With the help of Spinergie’s Voyage Optimizer, CORSICA Linea is on track to achieve its environmental goals. By using smart technology, improving ship operations, and adopting clean fuels, the company is setting a new standard for sustainable shipping in the Mediterranean.

CORSICA Linea’s journey toward lower emissions shows how combining innovation with environmental responsibility can create a better future for both business and the planet.
