Vietnam Launches Largest Bulk Carrier to Date

Vietnam has made a significant stride in its maritime industry with the launch of a new bulk carrier. This vessel, boasting a capacity of 65,000 deadweight tonnage (DWT), is the largest ever constructed by a Vietnamese company. Built by Nam Trieu Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of the Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (SBIC), this carrier is set to enhance Vietnam’s shipping capabilities. After successfully completing sea trials, it is now ready for operations from the northern port city of Hai Phong. This development not only marks a milestone for the shipbuilding sector but also aligns with the country’s broader strategy to boost its maritime economy.
Significant Features of the New Bulk Carrier
The newly launched bulk carrier is an impressive feat of engineering. It measures nearly 200 meters in overall length and 32.26 meters in width. With a gross tonnage of 35,823, it is designed to meet international standards. The vessel was officially launched on May 11 and underwent rigorous sea trials on December 4. These trials ensured that the ship meets the operational requirements for various maritime conditions.
The design of the carrier is a collaborative effort between Vietnam Shipbuilding Engineering JSC (VISEC) and Bluetech Finland Ltd. This partnership has resulted in a vessel equipped with modern and advanced features that are comparable to similar ships worldwide. The carrier has received classification from ClassNK, a respected Japanese ship classification society. This classification allows the vessel to operate in all international waters and meet the requirements of ports globally. ClassNK is known for its commitment to promoting cleaner and safer seas, which adds an additional layer of credibility to this new vessel.
Economic Impact and Future Prospects
The launch of this bulk carrier is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy. Alongside the delivery of this vessel, Nam Trieu Shipbuilding and Dong Bac Shipbuilding Industry JSC have signed a contract to build two more carriers of the same capacity. This agreement is anticipated to create job opportunities and improve incomes for local workers in the shipbuilding sector.
The development of the 65,000 DWT carrier series aligns with the Vietnamese government’s strategy to enhance the country’s maritime economy. By investing in shipbuilding and expanding its fleet, Vietnam aims to strengthen its position in the global shipping industry. This initiative not only supports economic growth but also fosters technological advancements within the country. As Vietnam continues to invest in its maritime capabilities, the future looks promising for its shipbuilding industry and the economy as a whole.
