MOL Signs 1st Book and Claim Service Contract with Be Forward for Used Car Transport

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) has signed a groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Be Forward Co., Ltd. for a pure car carrier book and claim service. This marks a significant step towards decarbonizing marine transport, particularly in the used car transport sector to Africa.

Innovative Partnership for Decarbonization

MOL and Be Forward have embarked on an innovative partnership to promote decarbonization in marine transport. Be Forward, a company specializing in used car transport to Africa, is the first customer to utilize this book and claim service. The MoU, which spans five years starting from April 2025, will enable Be Forward to claim the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction value associated with the use of liquefied natural gas (LNG) as fuel in MOL’s car carrier fleet. By using LNG-fueled vessels, MOL aims to reduce its GHG emissions, contributing to the broader goal of achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050. The book and claim method allows customers to register the GHG reduction from low-carbon ship transport services and claim the reduction value allocated to them, promoting transparency and accountability in emission reductions.

Commitment to Sustainability and Innovation

MOL’s commitment to sustainability and innovation is evident in this partnership. The company has been at the forefront of adopting LNG-fueled vessels to reduce its carbon footprint. This MoU with Be Forward is a testament to MOL’s dedication to contributing to the global effort to combat climate change. The collaboration also aligns with MOL’s “Sustainability Issues” initiative, which focuses on key issues for sustainable growth with society. By pursuing initiatives that reduce GHG emissions and partnering with stakeholders, MOL aims to make a significant impact on the environment. This partnership with Be Forward is expected to pave the way for similar collaborations in the future, driving the maritime industry towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future.

Significance of the MoU Signing

The signing ceremony, held on February 5, was a milestone event that highlighted the importance of the partnership between MOL and Be Forward. Hironori Yamakawa, President of Be Forward Co., Ltd., and Norio Abe, Executive Officer of MOL, were present at the ceremony, symbolizing the commitment of both companies to this innovative initiative. The book and claim service will not only benefit the companies involved but also set a precedent for other organizations to follow. By promoting the use of LNG-fueled vessels and enabling customers to claim GHG reduction values, this partnership contributes to the broader goal of achieving sustainability in marine transport.
