US Navy's Autonomous Vessel Defiant Launches for Testing
The U.S. Navy has unveiled the Defiant, a groundbreaking medium-sized uncrewed surface vessel (USV) designed to operate autonomously without any crew on board. Developed under the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s (DARPA) No Manning Required Ship (NOMARS) program, the Defiant recently completed construction and was spotted being towed through Puget Sound in Washington state. This innovative vessel is poised to enhance the Navy’s capabilities and pave the way for larger, more advanced USVs in the future.
Defiant’s Specifications and Upcoming Testing
Measuring 180 feet in length and weighing 240 metric tons, the Defiant is set to undergo extensive in-water testing, both at the dock and at sea. DARPA has announced that the vessel is scheduled for a multi-month demonstration at sea in spring 2025. Although the exact location of its current docking remains undisclosed, the vessel’s development has been led by Serco Inc., which has been working on the project since 2020. The estimated cost for the core Defiant USV, excluding additional mission systems, is approximately $25 million.
Traditionally, the U.S. military classifies uncrewed vessels like the Defiant as medium USVs (MUSVs) if they are under 200 feet in length and displace less than 500 tons. In contrast, large USVs (LUSVs) can measure up to 300 feet and displace up to 2,000 tons. The Defiant is designed to operate efficiently in open-ocean environments, featuring advanced hybrid power generation, podded propulsors, and high-capacity batteries. Its design emphasizes “graceful degradation,” allowing it to maintain operational capabilities even as individual systems may fail over time.
