MOL Deploys the World’s First Ammonia-fueled Capesize
MOL Launches World's First Ammonia-Powered Bulk Carriers
On March 24, 2025, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL) announced a groundbreaking partnership to introduce the world’s first ammonia dual-fuel Capesize bulkers and chemical tankers. In collaboration with its wholly-owned subsidiary, MOL Chemical Tankers Pte. Ltd., and Belgium-based CMB.TECH NV, the companies will jointly own and charter nine vessels powered by ammonia, a zero-emission fuel. This initiative is part of MOL’s broader commitment to achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Innovative Steps Towards Decarbonization
The shipping industry is increasingly focusing on decarbonization, with ammonia emerging as a promising clean energy source. MOL’s decision to adopt ammonia as a fuel aligns with its “MOL Group Environmental Vision 2.2,” which outlines the company’s strategy to reduce its environmental impact. The new vessels will not only contribute to a sustainable future but also set a precedent in the maritime sector for utilizing alternative fuels.
MOL Chemical Tankers, a leader in the chemical transportation industry, operates a fleet of over 110 stainless steel tankers. These vessels transport a diverse range of liquid chemicals, vegetable oils, animal fats, and lubricants across the globe. With a workforce of approximately 410 employees and offices in major cities worldwide, MOLCT is well-positioned to implement this innovative technology. The company’s headquarters is located in Singapore, and it emphasizes sustainability as a core aspect of its operations.
CMB.TECH NV, headquartered in Antwerp, Belgium, is a diversified maritime group that owns and operates more than 150 vessels, including crude oil tankers and chemical tankers. The company is committed to providing hydrogen and ammonia fuel solutions, either through its own production or partnerships with third-party producers. CMB.TECH is publicly traded on Euronext Brussels and the NYSE, reinforcing its position as a forward-thinking player in the maritime industry.

Commitment to a Sustainable Future
MOL’s initiative is part of a larger strategy to address key sustainability issues identified by the company. These issues focus on environmental conservation and innovation in marine technology. By investing in ammonia-powered vessels, MOL aims to contribute significantly to reducing the carbon footprint of the shipping industry and promoting a decarbonized society.
As the maritime sector continues to evolve, MOL’s partnership with CMB.TECH and its commitment to ammonia as a fuel source exemplify the industry’s shift towards sustainable practices. This collaboration not only highlights the potential of ammonia as a viable alternative fuel but also sets a benchmark for future developments in maritime technology.
