French cooperative orders novel boxship in Turkey

Windcoop Orders Innovative Sail-Powered Boxship

Windcoop, a French cooperative, has made headlines with a groundbreaking order for a sail-powered boxship in Turkey. The Tuzla-based RMK Marine will construct this unique vessel, which is designed to enhance sustainable shipping practices. Set to launch in May 2027, the ship will operate on a dedicated route between France and Madagascar, showcasing a blend of modern technology and eco-friendly design.

Details of the New Vessel

The new container ship, measuring 91.3 meters in length, comes with a price tag of EUR 28.5 million (approximately $31.6 million). It boasts a capacity of 210 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) and includes 40 reefer plugs for temperature-sensitive cargo. The vessel will be equipped with three windsails, allowing it to achieve an average sailing speed of nine knots. In situations where wind conditions are calm, a marine gas oil (MGO) diesel engine will take over, ensuring uninterrupted navigation.

In an exciting twist, Windcoop is also offering passenger berths for those seeking a unique maritime adventure. The ship will accommodate 12 passengers, who will experience life at sea alongside the crew. While not marketed as a luxury cruise, the cooperative emphasizes the opportunity for travelers to enjoy a comfortable journey powered by the wind, making it one of the first operational wind-powered cargo ships in the world.

France has positioned itself as a leader in the development of innovative wind-assisted vessels, and this latest project underscores the country’s commitment to sustainable shipping solutions. As the maritime industry continues to explore eco-friendly alternatives, Windcoop’s initiative represents a significant step toward greener logistics.
