Van Oord orders pair of rock installation vessels in China

Van Oord Orders Two Eco-Friendly Subsea Vessels

Dutch offshore contractor Van Oord is advancing its commitment to sustainability by ordering two next-generation subsea rock installation (SRI) vessels. These innovative vessels are designed to enhance operational capacity and support the growing demand for offshore energy infrastructure. Scheduled for delivery in 2028 and 2029, the new vessels will be built by Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore in China and will utilize methanol and biofuel for operation.

Innovative Design and Features

The new subsea vessels will each boast an impressive 35,000-tonne loading capacity and will be equipped with DP2 dynamic positioning systems. These features are essential for managing large rock sizes necessary for seabed protection and stabilization, particularly in the offshore wind and energy sectors. The vessels will be designed with a focus on efficiency and automation, incorporating a DC-grid and substantial battery capacity to minimize environmental impact. This innovative approach aligns with Van Oord’s ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability in its operations.

According to Maurits den Broeder, managing director of offshore energy at Van Oord, these vessels represent a significant investment in securing underwater infrastructure amid increasing global energy security concerns. He emphasized that the vessels embody the company’s dedication to innovation, safety, and long-term net-zero objectives. Van Oord has been a leader in subsea rock installation since the 1970s, known for pioneering flexible fallpipe vessels for offshore foundation protection and scour mitigation. The addition of these newbuilds will further strengthen the company’s position in the market while promoting higher efficiency and fuel flexibility.

Building on a Strong Foundation

With the addition of these two new vessels, Van Oord will enhance its existing fleet of three SRI vessels: Stornes, Nordnes, and Bravenes. The new vessels will not only improve operational efficiency but also embrace advanced technological advancements in automation. This strategic move reflects Van Oord’s proactive approach to meeting the evolving challenges of the offshore energy sector while ensuring environmental stewardship. As global demand for renewable energy continues to rise, Van Oord is positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable offshore operations.
