Chittagong's Shipyards Transition to Green Standards

In a significant move towards environmental sustainability, 14 ship-breaking yards in Chittagong have successfully obtained green shipyard certificates by the Hong Kong Convention. Shipping Adviser Brigadier General (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain announced this development during a recent inspection of KSRM Ship Breaking Yard in Sitakunda. He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting ship recycling yards in their transition to greener practices.

Government Support for Sustainable Ship Recycling

During his address, Brigadier General Hossain highlighted the government’s dedication to transforming the ship-breaking industry into a more environmentally friendly sector. He assured that all shipyards yet to comply with international standards would receive necessary assistance to meet the required regulations. This initiative aims to mitigate environmental pollution and uphold global standards within the industry.

Hossain’s remarks came after his visit to the KSRM Ship Breaking Yard, where he observed the ongoing ship recycling activities. He noted that the government is actively working to enhance the capacity of the shipping sector, with plans to acquire three additional ships for the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation (BSC). This acquisition is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the nation’s maritime capabilities.

Accompanying Hossain during the inspection were key officials, including Sitakunda Upazila Executive Officer Md. Fakhrul Islam, Additional Superintendent of Police Labib Abdullah, and Acting Secretary of the Ship Recycling Board Md. Nazmul. Their presence underscored the collaborative effort among various stakeholders to promote sustainable practices in ship recycling.

Future Prospects for Chittagong’s Shipbreaking Industry

The push for green shipyards is a crucial step for Chittagong’s shipbreaking industry, which has faced scrutiny over environmental concerns. By adhering to the Hong Kong Convention, these shipyards are not only improving their operational standards but also contributing to global efforts to protect marine ecosystems. The government’s proactive stance is expected to encourage more yards to pursue green certifications, fostering a culture of sustainability in the sector.
