Samsung Heavy Industries Targets U.S. Shipbuilding Market
Samsung Heavy Industries is ramping up its ambitions in the U.S. shipbuilding sector. On November 6, the company announced a strategic partnership with DSEC, a prominent ship design and equipment procurement firm. This collaboration aims to bolster Korea-U.S. shipbuilding cooperation and expand Samsung’s global reach.
Strategic Partnership with DSEC
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between Samsung Heavy Industries and DSEC marks a significant step towards enhancing their competitive edge in the shipbuilding industry. DSEC brings a wealth of experience from its collaborations with U.S. shipyards, offering services that range from design and equipment supply to maintenance and consulting. This partnership is expected to generate technological synergies that will benefit both companies.
Under this alliance, Samsung and DSEC plan to embark on various joint projects. These initiatives will focus on constructing medium-sized merchant vessels, providing modernization consulting for shipyards, and performing ship conversions and LNG carrier cargo tank repairs. Additionally, the partnership will explore green and digital solutions, as well as the utilization of research and development facilities.
Samsung Heavy Industries aims to leverage its advanced shipbuilding and offshore construction capabilities alongside DSEC’s expertise in design and procurement within the U.S. market. This collaboration is particularly timely, as it aligns with ongoing projects like the MASGA initiative led by the U.S. Navy. Furthermore, Samsung is looking to broaden its business horizons into other regions, including North America and Southeast Asia.
A spokesperson for Samsung Heavy Industries emphasized the strategic importance of this partnership, stating, “DSEC is an ideal partner with rich experience in ship design and procurement in the U.S.” They added that this collaboration will act as a catalyst for new growth opportunities, building on their previous strategic alliance with Big Marine Group.
