Andhra Pradesh Launches India’s First Autonomous Shipyard
The Andhra Pradesh government has officially approved the establishment of India’s inaugural autonomous maritime shipyard at Juvvaladinne Fishing Harbour in Nellore district. This groundbreaking initiative, spearheaded by Sagar Defence Engineering Private Limited, aims to bolster the country’s maritime defense capabilities while creating approximately 750 jobs in the region. The shipyard will focus on the development of unmanned maritime platforms, marking a significant advancement in India’s defense manufacturing landscape.
Significance of the Autonomous Maritime Shipyard
The proposed shipyard is set to become a specialized facility dedicated to the construction, integration, testing, and lifecycle support of autonomous and unmanned vessels. This includes both surface and underwater platforms, as well as intelligent maritime systems equipped with advanced sensors and command-and-control technologies. The establishment of such a facility is crucial for enhancing modern maritime operations, which require improved coastal surveillance and maritime domain awareness.
According to an official statement, the shipyard will generate around 750 jobs, comprising 300 direct positions and 450 indirect roles. This development is expected to strengthen the industrial and skills ecosystem in Andhra Pradesh’s coastal region, providing a significant boost to local employment. The state government has allocated 29.58 acres of land at the Juvvaladinne Fishing Harbour for the project, which includes 7.58 acres of waterfront land and 22 acres of harbor land. This strategic location offers direct sea access, essential for shipbuilding and the testing of autonomous maritime platforms.
The establishment of the autonomous maritime shipyard aligns with India’s growing emphasis on indigenous defense technologies and maritime self-reliance. With minimal human intervention, these advanced shipyards are becoming increasingly vital for offshore security and defense preparedness.
