MISC Expands LNG Fleet with New Orders

Malaysia’s leading shipping company, MISC, is set to enhance its liquefied natural gas (LNG) fleet by ordering up to six new carriers from Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China. The agreement includes three firm vessels with a capacity of 174,000 cubic meters, along with options for three additional units. All new ships will be chartered to the national oil company Petronas upon delivery, marking a significant development in MISC’s strategic growth in the energy sector.

Strategic Expansion of LNG Capabilities

This latest contract, signed alongside China Shipbuilding Trading Co (CSTC), highlights a robust start for Chinese shipbuilders in the LNG market this year, with MISC’s orders contributing to a total of 13 firm ships secured by domestic yards so far. The initial trio of vessels is already in the pipeline, and if all options are exercised, MISC could eventually operate a fleet of ten new ships. This growth aligns with MISC’s aim to solidify its presence in energy-related maritime services across Southeast Asia and beyond.

MISC currently operates over 20 LNG carriers, excluding newbuildings developed through joint ventures. The new vessels will be constructed based on Hudong-Zhonghua’s fifth-generation Changheng design, which incorporates cutting-edge technologies aimed at reducing emissions and improving fuel efficiency. According to the shipyard, the design is expected to lower daily carbon emissions by more than ten tonnes and meet or exceed current international energy efficiency standards.

The Changheng series utilizes GTT’s NO96 Super+ containment system, which ensures low boil-off rates and optimal cargo performance. This balance of cargo capacity, fuel consumption, and operational reliability has made the series highly favored among LNG operators. With MISC’s latest order, Hudong-Zhonghua now has over 48 LNG carriers of this class on order, marking a significant achievement for vessels of this size and type.

Chinese Shipbuilders Lead LNG Market

The success of Hudong-Zhonghua in securing these orders underscores the competitive landscape of the LNG shipbuilding sector, where both Chinese and South Korean yards are making substantial strides. Earlier this year, Jiangnan Shipyard recorded its first LNG order by booking two 175,000 cubic meter carriers for Eastern Pacific Shipping in Singapore. Following MISC’s announcement, Jiangnan also confirmed an order for four LNG carriers designated for long-term charter with Shell, managed by Shandong Marine Energy.

This momentum reflects a growing demand for LNG carriers, driven by the global shift towards cleaner energy sources. As MISC enhances its fleet capabilities, it positions itself at the forefront of the LNG sector, ready to meet the evolving needs of the energy market.
