Egypt Launches PV43 Patrol Vessel Program

The Egyptian Navy has officially unveiled a scale model of its new PV43 patrol vessel at the World Defense Show 2026, marking a significant step in its efforts to modernize its coastal patrol fleet. Developed by Alexandria Shipyard, this initiative aims to enhance Egypt’s maritime security capabilities amid increasing regional maritime activities. Construction of the first hulls has already commenced, positioning the PV43 as a vital component of Egypt’s future naval operations.

Details of the PV43 Patrol Vessel

The PV43 program was initiated in 2025 when the Egyptian Navy ordered ten 43-meter patrol vessels from Alexandria Shipyard. This project is being executed in collaboration with the German company Naval Vessels Lürssen, reflecting Egypt’s strategy of fostering foreign partnerships to bolster its national shipbuilding capabilities. This approach has previously been successful with the construction of Gowind corvettes and MEKO A200 frigates, further establishing Alexandria Shipyard as a key player in regional naval construction.

Designed based on the OOB-31 model from the Croatian Navy’s Omiš class, the PV43 features a length of 43 meters and a beam of 8 meters, optimized for operations in shallow waters. Its propulsion system consists of two diesel engines that drive two shafts, allowing the vessel to reach a maximum speed of 27 knots. At a cruising speed of 15 knots, it boasts a range of approximately 1,100 nautical miles, making it well-suited for extended coastal surveillance missions.

The onboard electronic systems are primarily supplied by Thales, incorporating advanced technologies such as a surveillance radar, an electronic warfare suite, and the TACTICOS combat management system. These features are designed to enhance the vessel’s capabilities in maritime surveillance and the protection of critical maritime infrastructure.

The armament configuration showcased at the World Defense Show includes a Leonardo Marlin 30 mm remotely operated naval gun and two 12.7 mm weapon stations. While the final selection of secondary armaments is still under discussion, the vessel is also designed to support limited military operations, with provisions for two twin launchers for anti-ship missiles, specifically the MBDA Marte Mk2/N missile. This capability allows the PV43 to engage targets beyond the reach of its naval guns, significantly expanding its operational scope.

Production Timeline and Strategic Implications

Steel cutting for the first PV43 vessel has already begun at Alexandria Shipyard, signaling the transition to the production phase. The Egyptian Navy expects to receive the first unit by 2026, with all ten vessels scheduled for delivery within five years of the contract signing. This timeline underscores the urgency and importance of enhancing Egypt’s naval capabilities in response to evolving maritime security challenges.

The introduction of the PV43 program highlights Alexandria Shipyard’s ambition to become a regional leader in the construction of surface combatants. By leveraging established technological partnerships and focusing on serial production, the shipyard aims to meet national defense needs while also positioning itself in a competitive market for medium-sized armed patrol vessels. This trend reflects a broader commitment to maritime security and the safeguarding of critical infrastructure, as nations increasingly prioritize the protection of their maritime domains.
