Oslo Prepares for Ammonia-Powered Shipping Revolution

The Port of Oslo is gearing up for a significant shift in maritime transport with the upcoming arrival of the ammonia-fuelled container ship, Yara Eyde. This vessel is set to launch a new weekly container service connecting Rotterdam, Oslo, Brevik, and Bremerhaven, marking a pivotal step towards establishing a zero-emission shipping corridor. The service, initiated by North Sea Container Line, aims to enhance sustainability in shipping as the Yara Eyde is expected to enter service later this year.

Innovative Shipping Corridor Set to Launch

The new container route, which will initially be serviced by the conventional vessel Tunadal, is designed to build cargo volumes and test port, terminal, and digital systems before the Yara Eyde takes over. This innovative approach is part of a broader initiative to reduce emissions in the shipping industry. M. Mathisen, director of Oslo Port, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “With Yara Eyde on the route, Oslo gains a zero-emission corridor to Europe.”

Construction Begins on World’s First Ammonia-Powered Containership

The Yara Eyde, with a capacity of 1,400 TEU, is a collaborative project involving Yara Clean Ammonia, Yara International, CMB.TECH, and North Sea Container Line. The steel cutting for this vessel took place in China last year, and its delivery is highly anticipated. Yara International is the primary cargo owner for this service, underlining the company’s commitment to sustainable shipping practices.

Ammonia is increasingly recognized as a viable low-carbon marine fuel, although its application as a bunker fuel is still in the early stages, primarily limited to pilot projects due to safety and toxicity concerns. The launch of the Yara Eyde is expected to provide valuable operational experience in handling ammonia as a marine fuel, paving the way for broader adoption in the industry.
