South Korean Shipyard Secures Major Container Ship Contract
HJ Shipbuilding & Construction, a prominent South Korean shipyard, has clinched a significant contract to build two advanced container ships for an undisclosed European shipowner. Valued at approximately $266 million, this deal also includes an option for the construction of two additional vessels. This marks a pivotal moment for HJ Shipbuilding, as it will be the first time the shipyard constructs container ships exceeding 10,000 TEU at its Yeongdo facility.
Innovative Ship Design and Environmental Compliance
The newly commissioned container ships will each have a capacity of 10,100 TEU and will be equipped with state-of-the-art scrubber systems. These exhaust gas cleaning systems are designed to allow the vessels to operate on high-sulfur fuel oil (HSFO) while adhering to the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) stringent global sulfur cap of 0.5%. The scrubber technology not only ensures compliance with international regulations but also enables the ships to operate in regions with stricter sulfur emissions standards.
Yoo Sang-cheol, CEO of HJ Shipbuilding, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, “Through continuous innovation and engineering breakthroughs, we have overcome physical limitations and are now able to build container ships exceeding 10,000 TEU at Yeongdo Shipyard.” This contract not only highlights the shipyard’s capabilities but also reflects the growing demand for environmentally friendly shipping solutions in the maritime industry.
As the global shipping sector increasingly focuses on sustainability, HJ Shipbuilding’s commitment to innovation positions it well for future opportunities. The option to build two additional ships further underscores the potential for growth and expansion in this competitive market.
