MV Liemba Rehabilitation Nears Completion in Kigoma

The Deputy Minister for Transport, David Kihenzile, announced significant progress in the rehabilitation of the MV Liemba ship, with the project now 55 percent complete. During a recent inspection in Kigoma Region, Kihenzile highlighted the vessel’s crucial role in boosting economic growth and enhancing transportation on Lake Tanganyika. He also visited a newly acquired search and rescue boat aimed at improving maritime safety in the region.

Enhancing Maritime Safety and Economic Growth

During his visit on February 20, 2026, Deputy Minister Kihenzile expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing rehabilitation of the MV Liemba, a vital asset for local transportation. He emphasized that the ship’s restoration is not just about improving transport services; it is also a strategic investment in the region’s economic development. The MV Liemba is expected to facilitate trade and connectivity for communities around Lake Tanganyika, which is essential for local economies.

In addition to the ship’s rehabilitation, Kihenzile inspected a search and rescue boat recently purchased by the Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation. This boat is designed to enhance the capacity for responding to maritime emergencies, accidents, and criminal activities on the lake. Kihenzile noted that such investments are crucial for ensuring the safety of passengers and their belongings while traveling on the water. The government is committed to strengthening marine transport services to support national development goals.
