New Leadership for PCU Bougainville at Norfolk Ceremony

NORFOLK, Virginia – The Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) Bougainville (LHA 8) marked a significant transition in leadership during a change of command ceremony held at Naval Station Norfolk on February 20, 2026. Captain Harry Marsh, who served as the ship’s first commanding officer, officially handed over command to Captain Jimmie Jensen III. This event highlights the ongoing development and readiness of the Bougainville as it prepares to join the fleet.

Captain Marsh Reflects on His Tenure

During the ceremony, Captain Marsh expressed deep gratitude to the crew, emphasizing the trust they placed in him. “When I took command, you handed me something sacred,” he stated, acknowledging the commitment and dedication shown by the crew throughout his tenure. Marsh highlighted the hard work and resilience of the team, noting their growth from a pre-commissioning crew into a capable warfighting unit. Over his three years in command, he oversaw the implementation of numerous ship-wide systems and established essential programs that ensured the crew was mission-ready for training and deployments.

Marsh’s leadership was instrumental in preparing over 500 Sailors for various operational phases, including ship delivery and at-sea periods. His efforts contributed to building a positive command climate and meeting critical manning requirements globally. Rear Admiral Neil Koprowski, commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Two, presided over the ceremony and praised Marsh’s leadership, stating, “Under his leadership, the Bougainville crew is building its legacy.”

Seafarers’ Well-Being Demands Urgent Action

Captain Jensen Takes the Helm

Captain Jimmie Jensen III, a native of Bridgeport, Nebraska, steps into his new role after serving as the ship’s executive officer for two years. He previously commanded the USS Germantown (LSD-42) and brings a wealth of experience to his new position. In his remarks, Jensen assured the crew that his guiding principles would remain unchanged. “I will continue to strive every day to take care of LHA 8 Sailors and families, and build warfighting readiness,” he affirmed.

The PCU Bougainville (LHA 8) is notable for being the third amphibious assault ship in the America Class and the first in its class to feature a well deck and a hybrid-electric propulsion system. Currently under construction in Pascagoula, Mississippi, the crew is focused on establishing qualifications, training, and operational planning in preparation for the ship’s commissioning. With Jensen at the helm, the Bougainville is poised to continue its journey toward becoming a vital asset in the Navy fleet.
