Colombo Dockyard Launches Advanced Cable Laying Vessels

Sri Lanka’s Colombo Dockyard has officially activated a shipbuilding contract with French subsea cable operator Orange Marine, paving the way for the construction of two cutting-edge cable laying vessels. This milestone follows the successful completion of all preliminary conditions outlined in the agreement, marking a significant step forward in the project. The vessels, designed by Vard of Norway, are tailored for the maintenance of submarine fiber optic telecommunication cables.

Progress and Design Features of the New Vessels

Colombo Dockyard reports that the design phase for the new vessels is advancing smoothly, thanks to close collaboration with Vard. The procurement process has already begun, with essential machinery and equipment ordered to ensure timely project execution. The Vard 9 03 design is specifically engineered to meet the operational needs of Orange Marine, emphasizing sea-keeping capabilities, low fuel consumption, and efficient layouts. These features make the vessels highly specialized tools for the repair market, enhancing the efficiency of fiber optic cable maintenance.

Kjell Morten Urke, general manager of Vard Design, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts among Orange Marine, Colombo Dockyard, and Vard. He noted, “We highly appreciate that the close cooperation has now resulted in another two vessel designs for the fiber optic cable ship segment.” Urke also highlighted the strong portfolio Vard has built in cable laying vessel design, emphasizing the commitment of their engineers to develop innovative solutions that ensure optimal functionality, efficiency, and long-term value for ship owners and operators in this specialized market.
