Trilateral Agreement Boosts Greek Shipbuilding

A groundbreaking trilateral agreement has been established between Onex Shipyards & Technologies and South Korea’s Hanwha Power Systems, with American officials present at the signing ceremony. This partnership aims to revitalize Greek shipbuilding while also tapping into emerging opportunities in the United States, particularly under the Trump administration’s U.S. Maritime Action Plan. The collaboration focuses on developing new LNG-capable vessels and enhancing critical energy infrastructure.

Strengthening Shipbuilding and Supply Chains

The newly formalized agreement emphasizes the development of newbuildings with liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity, alongside critical energy infrastructure projects, including Floating Storage Regasification Units (FSRU). Onex and Hanwha plan to work together to optimize shipyard production and improve efficiency, thereby strengthening reliable supply chains within the United States. Hanwha will supply essential equipment to Onex, which operates two shipyards in Greece. This collaboration will allow Onex to leverage Hanwha’s extensive expertise in constructing LNG and FSRU vessels.

Greek shipping sector adapts to market demands

Moreover, the companies are exploring the establishment of a U.S.-based shipyard that aligns with the objectives of the Trump administration’s maritime strategy. This plan emphasizes the expansion of the U.S. Navy and the revitalization of the U.S. merchant marine. U.S. Ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, underscored that the initiative aims to utilize the shipbuilding capabilities of American allies to bolster the U.S. industry. The maritime action plan includes proposals for developing shipbuilding enterprise zones and engaging foreign shipbuilders in the process.
