Singapore Welcomes Southeast Asia’s First Fully Electric Harbor Tug

Bureau Veritas Marine & Offshore (BV) has proudly announced the delivery of EON, the first fully electric harbor tug in Singapore and Southeast Asia. This groundbreaking vessel, built by PaxOcean and owned by Kuok Maritime Group (KMG), marks a significant step forward in the region’s commitment to cleaner and more efficient harbor operations. The delivery of EON is part of the Coastal Sustainability Alliance (CSA) initiative, which aims to promote sustainable maritime practices.
EON, measuring 29 meters in length and boasting a 50-ton bollard pull, features an advanced integrated electric propulsion system developed by ABB. The tug is powered by a 3 MWh lithium titanate oxide (LTO) battery pack, which is connected to ABB’s energy management and DC grid systems. This innovative setup allows for efficient battery integration, minimizing energy conversion losses between power sources and onboard loads. As a result, EON optimizes drivetrain efficiency and extends its operational range per charge, showcasing the potential of electric propulsion in maritime applications.

Advancing Coastal Decarbonization Efforts

BV collaborates closely with the CSA and KMG to classify these zero-emission vessels, which are among the first and largest locally designed electric harbor crafts intended for use in Singapore’s coastal waters. EON has been assigned BV’s BATTERY SYSTEM Notation, highlighting its fully electric propulsion architecture. This project is a crucial milestone in the maritime industry’s efforts to accelerate coastal decarbonization and support the transition toward a blue economy. It also aims to strengthen sustainable marine supply chains in the region.
In Singapore, BV has been instrumental in promoting maritime electrification. The organization has previously partnered with industry leaders such as Penguin International, Yinson, and Pyxis, reflecting a growing ecosystem of stakeholders dedicated to cleaner maritime operations. The successful delivery of EON further cements BV’s role in facilitating the deployment of next-generation marine technologies in Southeast Asia.
As the maritime industry continues to evolve, the introduction of EON signifies a pivotal moment in the shift towards sustainable practices. With the support of innovative technologies and collaborative efforts among industry players, the future of maritime operations in the region looks promising, paving the way for a greener and more efficient maritime landscape.
