New £200 Million Freight-Flex Vessels Contract Signed
Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) has officially awarded a £200 million contract to Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI) for the construction of two state-of-the-art freight-flex vessels. This significant development comes after a 10-day standstill period and aims to enhance the NorthLink service by replacing the aging Helliar and Hildasay vessels. The new ships are expected to be delivered by 2029 and will offer increased freight capacity and faster service, accommodating up to 200 passengers during peak times.
Enhanced Capacity and Efficiency for Scotland’s Islands
The new freight-flex vessels are designed to improve the efficiency and reliability of ferry services to Scotland’s island communities. With a focus on sustainability, these vessels will not only enhance freight capacity but also ensure faster travel times. The decision to replace the older vessels comes in response to feedback from islanders and stakeholders who have highlighted the need for better service options.

Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop expressed her satisfaction with the contract signing, emphasizing the importance of the new vessels in meeting the demands of island residents. “The freight-flex vessels will bring additional freight capacity, higher operating speeds, and the flexibility to carry up to 200 passengers on each ship at peak times,” she stated. This upgrade is expected to significantly bolster the resilience and reliability of ferry services for the Northern Isles.
William Zhou, President of Guangzhou Shipyard International, highlighted the strategic importance of this project. He stated, “We are truly privileged to partner with CMAL and Transport Scotland on this prestigious project.” GSI brings nearly three decades of specialized experience in the ropax sector, ensuring that the new vessels will meet the highest standards of design, engineering, and environmental responsibility.
Looking Ahead: A Milestone for Maritime Infrastructure
CMAL Chief Executive Kevin Hobbs described the contract as a “significant milestone” in the ongoing efforts to modernize Scotland’s maritime infrastructure. He noted that the new vessels will provide a vital boost to freight capacity and enhance service resilience for passengers. As the project progresses into the detailed design and construction phases, CMAL looks forward to collaborating closely with GSI to ensure the successful delivery of these innovative vessels.
With the contract now signed, construction is set to begin soon, marking a new chapter for ferry services in Scotland. The introduction of these freight-flex vessels is anticipated to not only improve transportation efficiency but also support the continued prosperity of island communities through enhanced connectivity and service reliability.
