Construction Starts on New Methanol-Ready Tanker

China’s Nantong Rainbow Offshore & Engineering Equipment (ROC) has officially commenced the construction of a second 13,000 DWT chemical tanker for Germany’s John T. Essberger. This new vessel is designed to meet Ice Class 1A standards and comply with the stringent IMO Tier III emissions regulations. Notably, the tanker will be equipped for future methanol propulsion and wind-assisted technology, although it will initially run on conventional marine fuels upon delivery.

Innovative Design and Features

The new chemical tanker will boast an overall length of 132 meters and a breadth of 21.8 meters, featuring 18 independent cargo tanks. This design not only enhances its cargo capacity but also aligns with modern environmental standards. ROC highlighted the vessel’s readiness for methanol propulsion, indicating a forward-thinking approach to alternative fuel adoption in the maritime industry.

Despite the vessel’s methanol-ready designation, the industry has shown a cautious stance towards retrofitting existing ships for alternative fuels. Many vessels ordered with similar specifications have yet to undergo modifications for methanol use, reflecting a broader trend of hesitance in the transition to greener technologies. The construction of this tanker marks a significant step for John T. Essberger as it aims to modernize its fleet while adhering to evolving environmental regulations.

As the maritime sector continues to explore sustainable fuel options, this newbuild represents both a commitment to innovation and a response to the increasing demand for eco-friendly shipping solutions. The collaboration between ROC and John T. Essberger underscores the importance of adapting to future energy needs in the shipping industry.
