HD Hyundai Expands Shipyard Venture in India
HD Hyundai is set to enhance its shipbuilding operations in India through a new joint venture, following a significant agreement with the Indian government. On April 20, the company announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) aimed at establishing essential infrastructure for a new shipyard. This collaboration involves the Indian central government and key organizations, including NSHIP TN and Sagarmala Finance Corporation.
Strategic Partnership with Indian Government
The MOU marks a pivotal step for HD Hyundai as it seeks to establish a joint venture shipyard in India. The agreement was signed with NSHIP TN, a Special Purpose Company formed under the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, which operates under the Indian central government. This partnership will facilitate the implementation of government support policies and various incentives, thereby broadening the scope of cooperation between HD Hyundai and the Indian authorities.
Previously, HD Hyundai had laid the groundwork for this venture by signing an MOU with the Tamil Nadu state government in December. In January, Chairman Chung Kisun engaged with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Global Energy Leader Roundtable, discussing potential cooperation measures. The new joint venture will be supported by the Shipbuilding Investment Fund established by NSHIP TN and Sagarmala Finance Corporation, with HD Hyundai taking the lead as the largest shareholder responsible for the shipyard’s operations.
As part of this initiative, the Indian government plans to place initial orders for domestic shipbuilding needs with HD Hyundai’s existing shipyards. Additionally, personnel from the Indian government will be dispatched to HD Hyundai’s facilities to gain shipbuilding expertise, which will be crucial for the successful establishment and operation of the new joint venture shipyard.
Innovative Approaches to Shipbuilding
HD Hyundai aims to enhance its competitive edge by constructing a digital shipyard that incorporates automation and AI-based smart shipbuilding technologies. This initiative will be supported through collaboration with academic institutions in India, fostering innovation and efficiency in shipbuilding processes. Furthermore, the company plans to establish a human resources development center dedicated to nurturing talent within the Indian shipbuilding sector.
In addition to its operational goals, HD Hyundai is committed to assisting domestic partner companies in entering the Indian market. Recognizing the importance of a stable supply chain for the new joint venture’s success, the company will support local entry for domestic shipbuilding equipment and materials firms. This strategy is expected to bolster the local shipbuilding ecosystem, encompassing essential components such as blocks and engines.
An HD Hyundai official remarked that this agreement signifies a new phase in shipbuilding industry cooperation between South Korea and India. The official emphasized that securing new orders and establishing innovative business models in the Indian market will pave the way for mutual growth, benefiting both HD Hyundai and its domestic partners.
